    Abstract
    Current mode control as usually implemented in switching power supplies actually senses and controls peak inductor current. This gives rise to many serious problems, including poor noise immunity, a need for slope compensation, and peak-to-average current errors which the inherently low current loop gain cannot correct. Average current mode control eliminates these problems and may be used effectively to control currents other than inductor current, allowing a much broader range of topological application.

    ABSTRACT
    Today’s voltage regulator modules (VRMs) employ off-line SMPS techniques. Traditionally,
    they are usually discarded when they fail because they are so challenging to debug and so
    inexpensive to replace. Investigation of these failed modules reveals some common failure
    modes. Some failures are caused by other systems’ passive components that fail after
    repeated electrical stress. Recognizing these common failure modes brings new life to a
    switch-mode power supply.

    This paper gives a practical example of the design of an offline switching power supply. The half-bridge topology is used with current mode control. Until recently this was considered an unstable combination, but a simple compensation circuit is now available and is described in this paper. This power supply has two outputs and uses a coupled inductor. Using a coupled inductor with a current mode controlled buck type topology is especially helpful, as will be explained later.
